The Importance of Annual Check-ups and Eye Exams

Annual physicals are critical for taking care of your health long-term. These visits help your doctor understand your health needs and work with you to improve or manage them. Annual eye exams operate the same way, allowing your optometrist to help you maintain your vision and eye health. At Advanced Eyecare, with offices in Raytown, Raymore, and Blue Springs, we are happy to help patients during their annual eye exams.

When Should You Receive an Eye Exam?

According to the American Optometric Association, children should have their first exam between six months and one year.  A second exam should be performed between three and five years of age. Beginning in first grade, children should have eye exams every year until age 18.  Because children grow so rapidly between first grade and high school graduation, annual eye exams are necessary to detect any changes in eye health or vision.

After age 18, adults should have their eyes checked at least every two years. For adults needing corrective lenses, annual eye and vision exams are recommended. After age 65, adults should have their eyes examined every year as the chances of having an eye disease increase with age. If you have not had a recent eye exam and live in the Farmington area, schedule an appointment with Burd's Eye View to protect your eye health.

What Is Included in an Eye and Vision Exam?

A comprehensive exam usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. During that time, our optometrist reviews your medical history. From there, we will provide various tests, including:

Vision Testing

People are most familiar with vision testing.  To determine how well you see objects at a distance, you will read an eye chart.  One eye is covered while the other is being tested.  This test determines if you have  20/20 vision.  If your vision is not 20/20, you will view the eye chart through a phoropter.   The device allows the optometrist to use different lenses to determine a prescription for your corrective lenses.

Pupil Movement

Your pupils respond to light by becoming smaller. Our optometrists can watch as your pupils become smaller by shining a bright beam of light into your eye. If the pupils do not shrink in size, there may be an underlying problem that needs to be addressed.

Glaucoma Detection

Two tests are used to detect glaucoma. One test checks for loss of side or peripheral vision. A second test measures your eye pressure using tonometry, which usually involves a quick puff of air onto your eye.

Eye Health

Your eye exam evaluates your eye movements to ensure alignment and that the eye muscles are working correctly. Our optometrists may also examine other parts of your eyes, such as the cornea, iris, or lenses. These exams can highlight cataracts or scars, or scratches on your eyes. Examining your retina and optic nerve can also help us diagnose eye diseases early on before symptoms set in.
